Levels of Education

Diploma

diploma is a document awarded by an educational institution (such as a college or university) testifying the recipient has graduated by successfully completing their courses of studies. Historically, it has also referred to a charter or official document of diplomacy.

The diploma (as a document certifying a qualification) may also be called a testamur, Latin for “we testify” or “certify” (testari), so called from the word with which the certificate begins; this is commonly used in Australia to refer to the document certifying the award of a degree. Alternatively, this document can simply be referred to as a degree certificate or graduation certificate, or as a parchment. The certificate that a Nobel laureate receives is also called a diploma.

Bachelors

bachelor’s degree (from Middle Latin baccalaureus) or baccalaureate (from Modern Latin baccalaureatus) is an undergraduate academic degree awarded by colleges and universities upon completion of a course of study lasting three to six years (depending on institution and academic discipline). The two most common bachelor’s degrees are the Bachelor of Arts (BA) and the Bachelor of Science (BS or BSc). In some institutions and educational systems, certain bachelor’s degrees can only be taken as graduate or postgraduate educations after a first degree has been completed, although more commonly the successful completion of a bachelor’s degree is a prerequisite for further courses such as a master’s or a doctorate

Graduate Diploma

The Australian equivalent of a postgraduate diploma is called a Graduate Diploma (GDip or GradDip), situated at AQF (Australian Qualifications Framework) level eight. universities offer postgraduate diplomas (PostGradDip). NZQA level of post graduate diploma is also eight. A postgraduate diploma (or Australian graduate diploma) indicates master’s-level studies;

Masters by coursework

A Masters by Coursework is a professional qualification involving the study of a specified set of core units and a selection of eligible elective units. Undertaking a coursework program will mean that you will attend classes, complete assignments and sit exams where applicable. Some Masters by Coursework also require the completion of a minor thesis as part of the course. Dependent on the course, part-time and online study options are available.

Masters by research

A Masters by Research (MRes) or a master’s degree with research is an advanced research-based qualification which allows the student to conduct in-depth research in their desired field and independently handle a single large research project. The degree aims to prepare researchers, either for professional work or for pursuing a PhD. Since the degree is more independent, it doesn’t have a set timetable to follow. Instead, students are expected to carry out the research as one or more extended projects under the guidance of a faculty supervisor. The degree sharpens the skills and knowledge gained during undergraduate study, as it primarily involves advance research in a chosen field and critical evaluation of different research methodologies.

Doctorate

doctorate (from Latin docere, “to teach”) or doctor’s degree (from Latin doctor, “teacher”) or doctoral degree is an academic degree awarded by universities and some other educational institutions, derived from the ancient formalism licentia docendi (“licence to teach”). In most countries, a research degree qualifies the holder to teach at university level in the degree’s field or work in a specific profession. There are a number of doctoral degrees; the most common is the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD), awarded in many different fields, ranging from the humanities to scientific disciplines.
